Iridium Extreme Replacement Program

On Friday April 27th, 2012, Iridium announced a replacement program for the Iridium Extreme®. The replacement program was initiated due to a mechanical element on the antenna stem of the Iridium Extreme® that triggers a deployment sensor with insufficient tolerances which is leading to instances of the sensor not working as designed. The problem was traced to a vendor manufacturing process and has since been rectified.

Iridium has identified several possible impacts to the use of the phone, and we estimate that a significant number of shipped units may be currently affected. One possible result of this mechanical issue is that a customer is still able to make calls and send messages but the phone’s performance may be reduced even if the antenna is fully extended. Another possible result is that the unit may operate at a power level exceeding the equipment’s authorized FCC radio frequency limits unless the antenna is fully extended. If the customer must use the phone out of necessity prior to its replacement under this recall, the customer needs to follow proper handset use guidelines as specified in the User Guide and ensure that the antenna is extended during all calls.

This issue may not impact all units; however, due to the nature of the issue, Iridium strongly requests that dealers and customers contact their Iridium Service Provider to determine the replacement procedure for their Iridium Extreme® phone. Iridium has implemented the fix for this issue and is restarting production immediately. We are very confident that Iridium Extreme® phones manufactured going forward will perform to specification and be of high level production quality.

We sincerely regret this occurrence and apologize for the impact on our customers, partners and distributors operations and any issues with using the phone in the field. Iridium is taking swift actions to assist with the replacement of Iridium Extreme® phones in partners’ inventory and in the hands of customers and we expect to have all recalled units replaced within 2 months.

The Iridium Extreme® is the most capable and highly featured satellite phone on the market and it is Iridium’s intent to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your continued support and we remain confident that all will benefit greatly from the features and the capabilities unique to the Iridium Extreme®.

EXPLORER Push-To-Talk (PTT)is a rugged voice dispatch and communication system. It is a cost
effective, IP based voice and data communication system designed to replace VHF/UHF based trunk radio
systems widely used in the field service, search and rescue, utility, mining and Oil & Gas sectors.
The system extends classical Push–To-Talk capabilities to hybrid data networks such as terrestrial 2G/3G/GPRS networks where available supplemented by the Inmarsat BGAN satellite network where no terrestrial network coverage is present. With no user intervention required the system automatically routes voice and data traffic via the least expensive network available.

The EXPLORER PTT solution is the result of 1½ years of field evaluation. The customer, a South American electricity distribution company covering 66.000 miles of distribution lines and a concessional area of 120.000 square kilometers were facing a communication challenge. They were using a traditional VHF trunk radio system provided by an infrastructure of 180 VHF towers with combined satellite and land line back haul to the dispatch centre. The mobile work force consisted of 500+ field engineers maintaining the power grid and serving subscribers on a daily basis. Faced with high infrastructure maintenance costs, poor VHF voice quality and limited coverage the company was looking for an alternative. They were looking for a cost efficient, simple and user friendly communication solution with a PTT/VHF user experience and with improved voice quality, support of data connectivity as well as expanded coverage.

Sending data? Need to restrict employees browsing the internet via satellite? Applied Satellite Technology Australia can help by providing reduced latency and the quickest route possible whilst lowering your costs. Applied Satellite Technology Australia (ASTA) extends their ability to provide you the solution you need whilst also expanding their network to include a point of presence (PoP) in Sydney, Australia

The new PoP will allow AST Australia to provide the direct termination of Inmarsat BGAN, FleetBroadband IP, VSAT and VoIP traffic locally, therefore providing the shortest route possible for data transmission. It also offers our customers the ability to connect via a ‘local tail’ such as multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) or virtual private network (VPN) which allows an end to end private network straight into their premises within the Asia Pacific region rather than passing over the public internet. This also allows end to end quality of service (QoS) to be assigned and other value added services such as firewalling as required.

AST Australia’s numerous clients in government, maritime and media rely on the dedicated link for secure, end-to-end data transfer. Due to the addition of force routing, all traffic that originates from Australia must first be routed back to Australia for legal interception before being sent onwards; the PoP in Sydney allows AST Australia to help its clients achieve dedicated secure data transfer whilst providing the lowest possible latency for Inmarsat traffic. Other industries who, over time, have turned to look at requiring a secure data transfer are the military, aid agencies and national government organisations (NGO) who are depending more and more on secure voice and broadband data in remote locations where terrestrial wired and wireless networks are unavailable or unreliable.

The Australian PoP is now fully operational, offering value added services such as user-defined firewall and URL filtering to all our customers and end-to-end direct streaming and hosted VPN connections. AST Australia’s PoP is supported 24/7/365 and is proactively monitored from AST Australia’s network operations center which is located in Perth, Western Australia.

AST Australia currently has the following applications running via the PoP:

Numerous banking applications throughout Indonesia which enable mobile automatic teller machines (ATMs) and staff in vehicles that roam around the central business district and metro area. Data is then transmitted via a BGAN 325 and AST Australia’s PoP, to ensure security, back to their head office in Jakarta and/or Sydney.

Secure supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) applications for corporate companies.v

Secure government and commercial applications that do not traverse the public internet to ensure maximum security for the organisations involved.

A large number of media services in Jakarta and Sydney are using the ‘stream store and forward’ functionality which allows commercial television and government customers to deliver HD video with ease, as well as IP-based news-gathering and video management.

Inmarsat M2M data services allow for secure and local delivery of asset and tracking data from the field directly to the client’s headquarters.

AST Australia assisted the NSW's Technical Services Unit in providing satellite equipment and air time essential for communication. By providing multiple units of the BGAN 500, AST Australia enabled the team to be able to communicate back to the Ambulance network anywhere they are deployed within Australia or overseas. The unit can be packed into a hard-shell backpack and can be transported on a flight as carry-on luggage, enabling rapid set-up. The unit also includes a solar panel charger allowing the batteries to be recharged without the need for mains or generated power.

Earlier this year the unit was deployed to Japan in wake of the March 11th Tsunami. Senior Support Analyst, John Calluy was placed on alert for pre-deployment support the night before the team was due to leave Australia. 'I was advised there would be a high likelihood that further BGAN kits would be required. As the team was departing at 3pm the next day, I only had a small window to ensure the kit was serviceable, checked and tested,' he says.

The major challenge was ensuring the unit was complete, all components tested and operational, and then obtaining at very short notice further BGAN units for standby for additional team deployments.

'We were able to achieve this on the Saturday morning with the help of the NSW State Manager, Vince Brennan, of AST Australia who came especially to Rozelle with two additional BGAN units. We had access to additional toughened notebooks as well, so if the requirement was to deploy a further team this could have been achieved within 12 to 24 hours."

Australia has donated the team's tents, shelters, generators, beds, food stocks and water to help local authorities in relief efforts. Medicines and medical equipment were given to the local hospital.

Applied Satellite Technology Australia (ASTA), a service partner of Iridium Communications Inc., announced the launch of the new Iridium Extreme™ handset for availability to ASTA customers. This new satellite phone is the most advanced, rugged handset on the market, with the ability to communicate the precise location of users across the globe. ASTA will also make available for purchase the Iridium AxcessPoint accessory that connects Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as smartphones, via Iridium’s global network.

AST Australia’s Managing Director, Henrik Jacobsen says, “We are excited to introduce these groundbreaking new products to our customers. Iridium has always been the gold standard in satellite handheld communication — these new devices add even more value and security for people working around the world, and we’re excited to be able to offer them to our customers.”

Iridium Extreme provides customers a single in-hand solution for voice, data, GPS, SOS, tracking and SMS — enabling them to make the connections that matter, under tough conditions, from the furthest reaches of the planet. Iridium Extreme is the smallest and lightest Iridium handset model ever released. It meets stringent U.S. Department of Defense Military Standard 810F for durability and is rich in capabilities, featuring the first dedicated two-way emergency SOS button on a satellite phone.

Iridium Extreme offers Partner Online Tracking Portals, with fully integrated GPS and location-based service capabilities for web-based location identification and tracking of employees, loved ones or friends. ASTA is bringing this solution to market with ASTA’s On-Sat Track solution, available now for integration and use with the Iridium Extreme.

“Iridium pioneered the satellite phone industry more than 10 years ago with the first handheld, commercial satellite phone,” said Matt Desch, CEO, Iridium. “Together with AST Australia, this launch is about more than just a satellite phone. While the innovative Iridium Extreme features a series of industry ‘firsts,’ including new, powerful capabilities and applications that work off the Iridium network, we are, at the same time, enabling devices that are already in customers’ hands with the introduction of the Iridium AxcessPoint.”

Iridium AxcessPoint is a lightweight, portable device that connects via USB cable to an Iridium phone (Iridium Extreme or Iridium 9555) to establish a Wi-Fi hotspot. Iridium AxcessPoint provides Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, with connectivity from anywhere in the world through Iridium, the world’s furthest reaching network. Users can begin using Iridium AxcessPoint with Blackberry and Android phones instantly, and will be able to download the new Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web application to their iPhone/iPod Touch, and Windows and Mac laptops to accelerate their email and web surfing experience over the Iridium network.

Thrane & Thrane SAILOR 900 VSAT – A Paradigm Shift

Thrane & Thrane, the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile satellite communication systems and one of its distributors, AST Australia, have extended the existing distribution agreement for SAILOR equipment to also include the new SAILOR 900 VSAT antenna system.

Richard Coston, Sales Director at ASTA said; “We are very pleased to have the SAILOR 900 VSAT in our VSAT portfolio. It greatly complements the rest of the SAILOR product range of broadband satellite terminals and will be an integral part of our customised VSAT solutions across all market sectors”.

The increasing usage of data on ships of all sizes has seen almost four years of tremendous success of the Inmarsat FleetBroadband satellite services and the SAILOR FleetBroadband user terminals, but it also reflects an increasing demand for maritime VSAT. For Thrane & Thrane that means a high-quality, high-performance, stabilised maritime Ku-band VSAT antenna, which has recently been launched.
Ku-band satellite service is available both on single beams at competitive rates and as international multi-region coverage, which is still growing. The use of IP based applications at sea is expanding to the benefit of operational and cost efficiency amongst vessel owners and operators.

Scientific Approach

In the process of creating the SAILOR 900 VSAT, Thrane & Thrane started with recording ship motion data during all of 2010 in order to determine the real stress and vibrations happening on real ships. Jens Ewerling, Global VSAT Business Manager further explains: “Thrane & Thrane then built the industry’s only multi-axis Advanced Dyanmics Simulator which now allows us to apply the comprehensive data recordings and design a true maritime antenna based on actual ship dynamics.” With the quality and performance targets set, Thrane & Thrane were determined to improve on what was already available.
